How to do a Self-Referral blood test

Blood tests and other pathology investigations are usually performed upon receipt of a written request by a referring clinical doctor. If the doctor has obtained the samples him/herself, the blood samples will accompany the written request. Alternatively, your doctor will refer you to one of the service depots of Dr WJH Vermaak Incorporated Pathologists, where one of our phlebotomy staff will obtain the required samples.

A valid referral note from your doctor is essential to enable the practice to claim the account for services delivered directly from your medical aid.

Self-referrals for a limited number of investigations are accepted, however, self-referrals have to be paid with sample collection because we cannot claim payment for these services directly from your medical aid. If you are entitled to reimbursement from your medical aid for self-referrals, you have to submit your claim to your medical aid fund.

The following tests may be requested upon self-referral:

  • Pregnancy Test
  • Glucose
  • HbA1c
  • Cholesterol
  • Urine Drug Screen
  • HIV (including counselling)
  • Cotinine
  • Blood Group
Please note that results may be picked up in person between 08:00 and 17:00 weekdays.
